Daniel Afriyie Barnieh’s contract at Hearts of Oak has officially expired today, December 31, 2022.
Negotiations over an extension are reportedly ongoing, but as yet no official confirmation has been made.
Hearts was hopeful of renewing Barnieh’s contract before the final day, however it has not been yet and as a result, the 21-year-old is now officially a free agent and no longer under contract with the Phobians.
The attacker is currently with the Black Galaxies squad for the upcoming CHAN tournament and has yet to give any firm indication of whether or when he will sign a new Hearts contract.
Afriyie Barnieh has received a lot of offers from European and African clubs which are currently being weighed by him and his representatives as they look for the best option for a move next month.
The player has been in great form for the home-based Ghana national team as he contributed immensely to their qualification for the 2022 CHAN tournament.
He scored three goals in four matches in the qualifiers against Benin and Nigeria, earning in place in the Black Stars final squad for the World Cup in Qatar.
The former Ghana U20 captain attracted a lot of attention home and abroad when he excelled in the last warm-up friendly match against Switzerland in Abu Dhabi on November 17, 2022.
He has rejected a transfer move to the Spanish club CD Leganes according to reports.
The Segunda Division side made an offer around US$400,000 for the services of the 21-year-old, they want to sign him during the next transfer window which opens on January 1, 2023.
At age 21, Barnieh has won seven trophies for both club and country.
