Asante Kotoko were held to a third straight draw as the champions failed to break down struggling Tamale City.
The Premier League newboys put their worries to one side to frustrate Premier League holders Asante Kotoko with a 1-1 draw at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on Wednesday as Ibrahim Babamu scored a breakaway goal that stopped the Porcupine Warriors to overtake Aduana Stars on the league table.
Kotoko had the better of the chances in the Premier League clash, but could not breach Tamale City’s defence. They took the lead through Issah Nyaabila’s 84th minute own goal.
But just when it seemed as if they were going to snatch the three vital points, the hosts pushed hard to level on the 86th minute.
Tamale City were back in the game and kept Kotoko under pressure after the equalizer but the Porcupine Warriors were able to gain point, thanks to Frederick Asare’s solid goalkeeping.
Coach Seydou Zerbo made some changes to get back to winning ways but it proved fruitless as the game ended 1-1 to see Kotoko remain winless in 2023.
The result gives Aduana Stars a chance to extend the lead when they beat Kotoku Royals on Thursday.
However, Kotoko sit second with 20 points after 12 games, while Tamale City occupy seventeenth position with 11 points.
The title holders have a trip to Bibiani to face Gold Stars on match day 13. They will hope to push for their first win in 2023.
