The January transfer window is now open and that means players that are out of contract are free to move.
Three Hearts of Oak players are in the list of players who will be moving on a free transfer in the Ghana Premier League.
These includes former Asante Kotoko defender, Christopher Nettey and ex-Hearts captain Fatawu Mohammed.
Free agency has always been an underrated quarry to hunt for hidden gemstones. Teams on a shoestring budget can avoid the complications of paying hefty agent and transfer fees if only they ponder over the options from the free agency. Like every other time, some big names are available to make a mark wherever they decide to go.
We bring you the details of some of the best GPL players currently available on free transfers.
- Mohammed Alhassan
The former WAFA center-back’s five-year deal with Hearts of Oak has come to an end after his contract with the GPL giants was mutually terminated.
He was an instrumental for the Rainbow club when they won a double, the Ghana Premier League and the FA Cup in the 2020/21 season under coach Samuel Boadu.
Alhassan would be tremendous addition for a title chasing side, Kumasi Asante Kotoko. He is strongly tipped to be signing with the Porcupine Warriors although has insisted no agreement has yet been reached.
- Rashid Nortey
Rashid Nortey looks set to leave Medeama SC on a free transfer after six years. His contract with the Mauve and Yellow side has officially expired and any team looking for a midfielder would be smart to try and sign the 27-year-old player.
What makes Nortey different from all other midfielders in the Ghana Premier League is his ability to resist the press, rarely loses the ball and is never in a hurry, he waits for the right angle and makes the right pass at the crucial moments.
- Fatawu Mohammed
The 31-year-old defender has confirmed he is no longer a member of the Phobian family. He was instructed to find a new club in December 2022.
“For now, I am no longer a Hearts of Oak player. I have been told by the management I can’t work for them anymore,” Fatawu Mohammed stated.
He stayed with Hearts of Oak for ten years after joining from Real Tamale United in 2012. Six years later, he was named as the club’s captain before earning his first and only Black Stars invitation ahead of a World Cup qualifying fixture away to South Africa in November 2021.
He was relegated to the bench following the arrival of Samuel Inkoom. He ended his journey with five trophies (One GPL title, two FA Cup titles, One Super Cup title and One President’s Cup title).
- Christopher Nettey
Asante Kotoko announced in December last year that the right-back has left the club following the expiration of his contract.
The 24 year old joined the Porcupine Warriors from Attram de Visser Academy in 2019, and became a key cog of the team.
Nettey played a key role in helping the Reds clinch their 24th Premier League title last season, featuring in almost all of the games.
He has been linked to Accra Hearts of Oak to replace Fatawu Mohammed.
- Junior Kaaba
The Phobians has mutually terminated their contract with the Cameroonian following the recommendation by head coach Slavko Matic who hasn’t been impressed with the forward.
The 23-year-old joined Hearts in August last year on a three-year deal after an impressive display in the Cameroonian championship with Fauvre de Azur Elite FC.
Kaaba managed six appearances in the Ghana Premier League since the beginning of the 2022/23 season where he failed to hit the back of the net in the process.
He also played both games in the two-legged CAF Confederation Cup tie against Malian side AS Real de Bamako and failed to score too. Kaaba could return to the Cameroonian league after five months.
