Aimen Mahious second half goal was the difference in Algiers as Algeria claimed an opening-day CHAN tournament win against 2014 champions, Libya in Group A.
It was a cagey affair to begin with, neither side managed to find their rhythm or fashion any clear cut chances at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.
Libya tried to hold the hosts, but the Fenec Foxes continued to play out from the back, leading to some good moves.
Algeria attacked more in the in the first 15 during the second half and found the breakthrough after 57 minutes. Aimen Mahious fired in a superb goal from the spot to snatch the lead.
Libya had a much better second half, pressed high but again they ultimately failed to create any big chances. They stepped, tightened in the final stretch and we’re denied by the woodwork.
Algeria remained switched on without the ball, defended resolutely and ultimately managed to see the game out and earn three valuable points in what is a very tough group.
The hosts will take on Ethiopia in their next group game while Libya also face Mozambique on Tuesday.
