Asante Kotoko was inexplicably held to a 1-1 draw by Bibiani Gold Stars at Dun’s Park on Monday in their match day 13 tie in the BetPawa Premier League at the Dun’s Park.
The Porcupine Warriors took the lead in the first half with Steven Mukwala’s first-half goal and looked set to secure all three points until Yahaya Adraman’s second-half strike from the spot cancelled Kotoko’s lead to leave the Reds frustrated.
After the equalizer, it seemed the floodgates would open again for Gold Stars who had a second penalty, but Kotoko benefited from an inspired performance by goalkeeper Frederick Asare, who produced a string of superb saves.
The Porcupine Warriors were looking to get back to winning ways, having drawn their last three games but wasted chance after chance and failed to close the gap on the league table.
Coach Zerbo, aiming to avoid overseeing a fourth consecutive Kotoko league draw, handed Georges Mfegue a starting berth for the first time after missing their last three games.
The Cameroonian international broke forward well to drive Kotoko up the pitch along with Mukwala and Amankona. Yet, they slipped off the pace in their bid to secure their first win in 2023.
The draw leaves them in third place with 21 points – three points off the first position while Gold is in fifth place with 20 points.
