Former Ballon d’Or and World Cup winner, Lothar Matthaus has expressed his happiness after signing a partnership deal with Ghana Premier League side, Accra Lions.
Lothar Matthaus was officially unveiled as the major partner of the Ghanaian club on Tuesday, May 23 in Accra.
Together with business partners Oliver König, a former German player agent, and former Ghanaian international Frank Acheampong, Matthäus is keen to develop talent in West Africa and open up a route to Europe for young players.
“I’m very happy to be here. I was at your training session yesterday and I must admit you’re very professional, I wasn’t expecting it. I saw good players with great techniques that can excel in the Bundesliga,” said the legend.
“We want to bring young players to Europe in a serious way and already well-trained,” the former Bayern Munich star said. That’s why we’re also investing in the training ground here.”
Following his retirement from professional football, Matthaus worked as a trainer in Austria, Serbia, Montenegro, Brazil and Israel from 2001 to 2011.
The Accra-based side is said to be worth about €6 million and will jointly be owned by football agent, Oliver König from Frankfurt and Ghanaian footballer Frank Acheampong.
The Premier League side have been a strong force since gaining promotion to the Premier League two seasons ago.
They currently occupy the ninth position on the Ghana Premier League table, nine points behind league leaders, Medeama Sporting Club.
