Following unsuccessful spells at Accra Hearts of Oak and now relegated King Faisal, former Bechem United striker Abednego Tetteh made an unexpected move to Bibiani Gold Stars, and has defied all odds to become the top scorer of the 2022/2023 Ghana Premier League (GPL) league season.
His rise to become the leading scorer of the just ended season is a sensational one, as his failures at Hearts of Oak, 2021 season league champions and at King Faisal nearly brought his football career to a total truncation. Abednedgo Tetteh, ”Zlatatan” as he is affectionately called by the Ghanaian sporting media, gave it a further try by changing environment, in effect, moving to Bibiani Gold Stars where his quality has been proven to be still potent.
The move to Gold Stars, a less pressuring environment made his move a profitable one for both parties, and though he remains thankful for the opportunities given him at Hearts of Oak and King Faisal, his return to the headlines for the right reasons after join coach Michael Osei’s side has brought smiles to his face again.
The former Bechem United forward finished the current league season scoring a total of 18 goals to be adjudged the top 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐫 of the 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐/𝟐𝟑 league season. He beat off competition form Bechem United’s Hafiz Konkoni and Sampson Eduku of Tamale City FC, who finished with 15 and 14 goals respectively.
Abednego Tetteh becomes the 6th player in the history of the GPL to win the golden shoe with 18 goals, and this is the 5th time this has happened. For the records, Emmanuel Quarshie (Sekondi Hasaacas) won the GPL golden shoe with 18 goals in 1980, a feat which was jointly achieved in the 2002 season by Bernard Don Bortey and Charles Asampong Taylor (all of Accra Hearts of Oak).
In 2005 season, Prince Tagoe (Hearts of Oak) also was adjudged top scorer of the league season after scoring 18 goals at the end of the season. The feat was repeated ten years later in the 2020-2021 season when Diawusie Taylor (Karela United) finished the season as top scorer also with 18 goals.
