Former Berekum Chelsea midfielder Yaw Alexander says Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko have failed to compete well in Africa because their players lack the required mental fortitude and character.
Alexander was part of the Berekum Chelsea squad of 2012 that reached the group stage of the CAF Champions League.
“For me I think Hearts of Oak and Kotoko players nowadays do not have the needed character to compete in Africa. If you watch matches of Hearts of Oak and Kotoko these days and compare it to the recent past time, you could see that the standard has fallen” , Yaw Alexander told Ghanasportspage.com in a wide-ranging interview.
“When we (Berekum Chelsea) reached the Champions League group stage, you saw the level of the players. Everyone was really determined to do well and it was even our first time going to Africa but we went far”, he added.
Chelsea finished third in their 2012 Champions League group containing TP Mazembe, Zamalek and Al Ahly and it was only Ahly who were able to defeat the Ghanaian.
Meanwhile, Medeama SC and Dreams FC will represent Ghana in the 2023/24 CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively.
