Former Asante Kotoko striker Nasiru Gani says the club should be playing in Africa consistently in order to gain the needed experience as the Porcupine Warriors seek to be part of the best teams on the continent.
The Reds have not won the CAF Champions League again since their last one in 1983. Reaching the group stages of the flagship Africa club competition has also been a problem for the Ghanaian giants.
Gani believes the only way for Kotoko to be relevant again in Africa is to consistently qualify for the CAF Champions League or the Confederation Cup.
“To be able to win the Champions League or the Confederation Cup , Kotoko will need to always play in the competition in order to gather enough experience.” , Gani told Fox FM.
“If you look at it , the club will not be in Africa this season. Even Ogum who won the league with the team before he left was not the one that took them to Africa and so he will also need that experience.”
“That has been the main problem of Kotoko. Today they go to Africa and fail , the next time they may not even qualify to go to Africa again and so it becomes like a cycle. Until we try to compete consistently in Africa , it will always be tough to win the competition because there are better teams out there” , he added.
