Former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah is in the running for a spot on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council after it was confirmed by the association that he has submitted his nomination forms.
His bid is focused on securing one of the five positions designated for Premier League clubs, with his candidacy being supported by Asante Kotoko. The GFA has reported that a total of 11 candidates, including Appiah, submitted their forms after the application deadline.
His personal aid , Frank Owusu Addo , has officially reacted to the candidature of the former Ghana boss.
“He has played for the Black Stars for close to 15 years , he played for Asante Kotoko and so when it comes to the football game , he was good. Last Friday he filed and completed all the necessary paperwork to enable him contest” , Frank Owusu Addo said on Kumasi-based Fox FM on Monday.
“In his last job as Ghana head coach , he was not sacked. His contract with the GFA came to and end in 2019 and the two parties agreed to part ways. After that , he (Kwesi Appiah) decided to take a sabbatical leave. Always when Kwesi Appiah talks , he makes reference to the fact that about 95% of the what he has achieved today was due to Asante Kotoko and so today if Otumfour calls him to come and serve the club , he is always willing to accept the call of his Majesty.”
“Kwesi sees Asante Kotoko in a different way. For him , Kotoko is a great , great football institution. Recently the GFA started the 2023 electioneering process and after the Kotoko leaders deliberated , it was agreed that Kwesi Appiah go for the Executive Council position on the ticket of Kotoko.”
“They believe Kwesi is the right candidate to win the slot for Kotoko on the powerful GFA body. Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko are the two biggest clubs in Ghana and it is only reasonable for us to get representatives on the Executive Council from these teams”
“It tells that Kwesi Appiah is willing ready and willing to serve. We know Kwesi Appiah is going to be on the Executive Council” , Owusu Addo concluded.
The Asante Kotoko interim management committee member will compete for one of the five Premier League slots against the likes of Kingsley Owusu Bonsu of Bechem United , Nana Oduro Sarfo , Frederick Acheampong , Anthony Kwesi Aubyn , Ransford Abbey , Onyina Asenso , Edmund Kwabena Ackah , Amadu Moro Ibrahim of Hearts of Oak , Elloeny Amande of Karela United and Raphael Tawiah Gyambrah.
