Asante Kotoko are set to be charged by the Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association after fans of the Porcupine Warriors destroyed the a number of stadium seats at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex on Sunday.
The Week Six league encounter between the two sides ended 2-2.
The Ashanti derby definitely lived up to expectation as four goals were scored in the first ever top-flight meeting between the Reds and the newly promoted Ghana Premier League side.
However the violent actions of some of the Kotoko supporters present at the stadium in Abranke marred the beauty of the contest.
Referee Latif Abdul Qadir awarded the home team a late penalty when Kotoko were 2-1 up thanks to Steven Mukwala equalizer and Michael Kyei Dwamena’s effort. The angry Kotoko fans started to cause mayhem by dismantling the plastic seats which they sat on and then threw them onto the pitch as the FIFA referee was forced to temporarily halt the game.
Dr. Ogum , the Kotoko coach , had to intervene by talking to the protesting traveling fans to calm down. When there was finally peace at the stadium , Amidou Diarra converted the penalty in the 90 + 14th minute to close the game at 2-2.
Article 34 of the Ghana Premier League Regulations (2019 edition) is clear :
“Throwing of sachet water, plastic bottles and other objects onto the field of play shall attract a fine of not less than Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (Gh¢5,000.00)”.
“The Association shall hold clubs responsible for the misconduct of their supporters before, during and after a match.”
The Ghanaian giants could therefore be punished following the shameful action of some of their traveling fans.
