Former Hearts of Oak defender Daniel Quaye has revealed that the club owes him and the 2000 Champions League winning squad $25,000 each.
According to him, the aforementioned amount was the prize money set by the board to inspire them to win the competition.
However, after accomplishing the most celebrated achievement in the club’s history, the players were not paid the money due to them.
Speaking with Ghanasportspage.com, he disclosed that some members of the squad at the time were bitter about the club.
He further urged the current management to make an effort to resolve the issue by having a sit down with the famous ‘64 battalions’ squad to iron the issue.
“It’s the 2000 Champions League squad. They promised us money but didn’t make full payment. I know a lot of people who have cursed the team out of pain. Unless they call the 64 battalions and have a sit down with them and settle the issue,” he said.
Regarding the money promised, Dan Quaye mentioned that they were promised $25,000 and other bonuses but received none.
He claimed that the club avoided paying the promised $25,000 by allocating the proceeds of the FIFA Club World Cup among the players.
“They promised each player $25,000 if we win the Champions League and also promised us some bonuses. Instead of paying us the money due us, they shared the money earned from the FIFA Club World Cup. Since then, we haven’t received anything from them. That’s why some are bitter about the club.” he told Ghanasportspage.com on 31st December 2023.
The 64 battalions are arguably the Hearts of Oak’s greatest-ever squad. They won the club a treble in 2000, becoming the only Ghanaian club to achieve the feat.
They won the Ghana Premier League, FA Cup, and the CAF Champion League.
The success saw Hearts of Oak ranked among the top 10 clubs in the world within the period.
Some of the reverend names from the squad included Sammy Adjei, Yaw Amankwah Mireku, Jacob Nettey, Agyeman Duah, Adjah Tetteh, Charles Taylor, Emmanuel Osei Kuffour and Ishmael Addo.
