Coach Chris Hughton’s decision to start Richard Ofori at the AFCON stirs controversy. Amamoo, who played for the Black Stars between 2008 and 2010 is unhappy with the gaffer’s decision to start Ofori over Ati Zizgi.
The former Ghanaian international believes lack of match practices led to Ghana’s against Cape Verde on Sunday.
“Ati Zizgi had a lot of confident after the World Cup. He did well during the tournament. The defenders know his movement but I don’t get why the coach used his second choice goalkeeper (Ofori) although he is an experienced goalkeeper. Now, the defenders will have to study him again because he was absent from the team for a long time through injuries. Ofori is good but he is not used to the current defenders.
“Ati Zizgi knows the defenders at the moment and I don’t get why Ati Zizgi should be changed. Ofori should have been given about five friendlies for him to know his defenders before the AFCON,” Amamoo told Mothers FM.
Ofori faced criticism for perceived lapses that could have contributed to both goals conceded by the Black Stars.
His last competitive match was in the CAF Champions League at the end of September. Ofori’s last league game is even further back, taking place in autumn 2022. Since then, he has been out injured, and after that, he alternated between the bench and the stands this season.
