The Angola head coach Pedro Goncalves has said big names do not count on the pitch as he prepares to face star studded Nigeria in 2023 AFCON quarter-finals.
Speaking with ghanasportspage.com, he acknowledged that the Super Eagles are favourites to win the tournament, but his side is ready to give their best.
“For sure, they are the favorites because they have a lot of big names in the world of football. Even one of the strikers (Osimhen) I voted for as the best player from last year is there. So they have a good team and big names, but on the pitch, big names don’t count.”
He indicated that his side is focused on their strategy for the game and hope they will get the desired results.
“Let’s focus on our work and strategy for the game, and then we will see which one will be the best. If we can do it.”
Angola is the highest scoring side at the AFCON, while Nigeria has the best defence at the tournament.
The two sides will go head-to-head in a much anticipated quarter-final clash at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny on Friday, February 2, 2024.
