The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) appointed former footballer, Hossam Hassan as the new national team head coach.
The all-time Egyptian top scorer replaces Rui Vitoria who was sacked by the EFA just hours ago following Egypt’s disastrous campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Pharaohs failed to win a single game throughout the tournament and were eliminated in the round of 16 after losing a penalty shootout to DR Congo, which led to Vitoria’s dismissal.
Despite rumours of former AFCON winner Herve Renard potentially taking charge of Egypt, the EFA have decided to give the job their legend.
Hossam Hassan emerged as the leading candidate for the vacant role according to multiple reports.
He is the third coach appointed by the EFA in the last two years after Ehab Galal replaced Carlos Queiroz before Rui Vitoria arrived three months later.
