Evans Owusu scored twice for FC Samartex as they beat Aboubakar Ouattara’s Hearts of Oak on week 23 of the Ghana Premier League at the Nsenkyire Sports Complex.
Owusu’s brace, however, extends the club’s lead at the GPL summit to a commanding five points over Nations FC who face Asante Kotoko on Sunday.
Hearts of Oak, ranked 7th, were looking for their second consecutive win, having beaten Heart of Lions in their previous game but they were denied by Samartex resolute defending.
Coach Nurudeen Amadu’s team took the lead when Evans Owusu scored with a header from Francis Gyetuah’s cross.
Hearts of Oak were the more purposeful early on, setting their stall out by dominating the ball but the hosts were happy to sit deep to end the first half with a goal lead.
It took the Phobians 32 minutes in the second half before getting the equaliser through Hamza Issah. It is the attacker’s first goal in his first game after returning from injury.
Not long after, Evans Owusu took matters into his own hand again as he scored the game’s winner in the 80th minute to hand Coach Aboubakar Ouattara a first defeat since joining the Phobians.
Samartex victory was their second in their last four meetings with Hearts of Oak.
They will take on defending champions Medeama SC on week 24, while Hearts of Oak return to Accra to host Gold Stars.
