Former Accra Hearts of Oak midfielder, Lawrence Adjah Tetteh has said he wished he never played the game that claimed the lives of 127 football fans at the Accra Sports Stadium.
It’s been 23 years now since the disaster that struck the Accra Sports Stadium, during a Premier League game between fierce football rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
However, the heart of Lawrence Adjah
Tetteh is filled with tears and has now revealed that he regrets taking part of that game.
“This day (May 9th) reminds us of what happened in 2001 during Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko game in Accra. I was part of the team and what makes me sad is the news that came after the game. Although we won but we were all sad. I’ve been saying that I wish I didn’t play. You win to celebrate or jubilate but not to weep. I don’t think the players will play if they knew that disaster was going to happen.
“I think God wanted to tell us something because we saw some signs in the morning followed by a heavy rain before the game.
“What I want to tell our football loving is to stay away from hooliganism. Accept any result after every game. The supporters understand the game now and I believe we can continue like this,” Adjah Tetteh told Mothers FM.
