Former Asante Kotoko defender, Awal Mohammed has called for unwavering backing for newly appointed national team head coach Otto Addo, emphasizing the importance of patience amidst mixed results.
In a recent interview with Ghanasportspage.com, Awal stressed the need to refrain from premature judgments based solely on the team’s initial performances under Addo’s leadership.
“Once a Ghanaian, always a Ghanaian,” Awal remarked, highlighting the significance of supporting local coaches and their efforts to elevate Ghanaian football on the global stage.
“All I can say is that once a Ghana is always a Ghana. No matter how bad we are, we are better than some countries and we should support the coaches employed because no matter what you say, they are already there and they are also Ghanaians of which when it goes on well for them, Ghana will take the praise than appointing a white man and when things go well, he will send it to his country but with ours, when they win cups for us, the glory will remain here but i will suggest we add a white man to the technical team to share ideas but there’s nothing wrong with their appointments,” he said in a interview with Ghanasportspage.com.
While advocating for additional expertise, Awal suggested integrating a foreign coach into the technical team to enhance collaboration and knowledge sharing.
“I know JP (John Paintsil), Fatawu (Dauda) personally, they are hard workers and goal getters, for Otto Addo I don’t really know him because he studied abroad but for JP, we’ve played together and he has coached me as a player before together Fatawu so we must support them for things to go well for us, it is our well-being that we all are seeking for”
Despite recent setbacks, including a 1-2 defeat against Nigeria and a draw with Uganda, Awal urged Ghanaians to rally behind Addo and his team, underscoring the importance of patience in building a competitive squad capable of restoring Ghana’s football glory.
“They will need our support to take Ghana to where we want it to go. Nothing is impossible, we must pray for them to help us reclaim our lost glory”
