Hearts of Oak head coach, Aboubakar Ouattara, has downplayed the team’s chances of winning the league next season, stating that his primary goal is to avoid relegation.
The Phobians endured a turbulent campaign last season, struggling throughout and only securing their league survival with a dramatic final day comeback win over Bechem United.
In response to the disappointing season, Coach Ouattara is focused on strengthening his squad before the new season begins. So far, Hearts of Oak have signed four new players: goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, Samuel Amofa, and former Nations FC duo Asamoah Boateng Afriyie and Michael Awuah Mensah.
In a recent interview, the experienced tactician emphasized the importance of building a solid team to avoid another relegation battle.
“My target is to ensure we don’t battle relegation next season. The supporters always want us to win, and any big team is expected to compete for trophies. But for now, our main focus is to build a solid team and avoid the relegation zone.”
Addressing the high expectations of the fans, he added, “In football, fan agitation is normal. Man proposes, but God disposes.
For instance, Wydad Casablanca and ASEC Mimosa, who are typically strong teams, have faced crises and failed to qualify for continental competitions.
“We need to focus on stability and gradual improvement. I can’t guarantee a trophy next season, but I am committed to building a team that can compete and stay clear of relegation.”
Hearts of Oak recently lost the maiden Democracy Cup to bitter rivals Asante Kotoko and will soon regroup to prepare for the upcoming season.
