Asante Kotoko SC is a club that holds a special place in the hearts of many, and for former captain Abdul Ismail Ganiyu, wearing the armband was a privilege that carried immense significance.
Ganiyu was named the captain of Kotoko in 2021 after the departure of long-serving skipper Felix Annan, and he led the team to the Ghana Premier League title in the 2021/22 season.
In an exclusive interview with Ghanasportspage.com, Ganiyu reflected on his time as captain, describing it as a great honour that comes with immense responsibility.
“It’s an honour for any player to be given the captaincy of Asante Kotoko, but for me, it’s even more special because I had to lead a team that has a rich history and tradition,” Ganiyu said.
“It’s not just about wearing the armband; it’s about being a role model for the younger players and setting an example for them to follow.”he told Ghanasportspage.com.
Ganiyu acknowledged that the captaincy comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when it comes to maintaining a certain level of professionalism and conduct.
However, he emphasized that the benefits of captaining Asante Kotoko far outweigh the difficulties.
“When you are given the captaincy of Asante Kotoko, you are expected to eschew certain lifestyles and maintain a high level of professionalism,” Ganiyu said.
“But it’s worth it because you are representing a club that is revered across the continent. It’s an honour that I will always cherish, and I urge every player who gets the chance to play for the club to give their all, for there are more benefits associated with it.”
Ganiyu has since played for several other clubs, including Al-Talaba, Baba Boys, and TP Mazembe, since leaving Asante Kotoko at the conclusion of the 2020/2021 football season.
