Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has committed to cracking down on the unauthorized involvement of betting companies in Ghana Premier League (GPL) matches, asserting that no bookmaker has been officially licensed to offer odds on these games.
The recent appearance of GPL matches on betting platforms has raised significant concerns, especially in light of past match-fixing scandals like the notorious AshantiGold versus Inter Allies incident from the 2020/21 season.
Speaking at the GFA’s 30th Ordinary Congress, Okraku outlined the association’s plan to address these issues, announcing that the GFA’s legal team will directly engage with betting companies to put an end to these unauthorized practices.
“We have not licensed any betting company to take odds on our games. We are going to empower our legal department to confront this issue head-on. It is not okay for betting companies to feed on our football,” Okraku stated. “It is time to say no to such companies. We are open to doing it the legal way. We will invite companies who want to partner with us to speak to us.”
As the new Ghana Premier League season is set to begin on September 6, the GFA’s firm stance is aimed at restoring integrity and trust in the league.
