Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has outlined specific conditions that must be met for team captain Andre Ayew to earn a recall to the national squad.
The 34-year-old forward has been without a club since his contract with Le Havre expired, and he has not been included in recent Black Stars call-ups.
Speaking during the squad announcement for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger, Addo was asked about Ayew’s continued absence.
He responded by stating that Ayew needs to secure a club and achieve significant on-field success before being considered for a return to the national team.
“Andre Ayew is a good player, but at the moment, he is not here. He doesn’t have a club, but nobody knows the future,” Addo explained. “If he gets a club and performs—scores 20 goals, maybe—then he can return because we are building something for the future.”
Ayew’s omission from the last two international breaks has sparked discussions among fans and analysts. However, Addo’s remarks suggest that the veteran forward must prove his form and fitness to rejoin the Black Stars as they focus on developing a younger squad.
The Black Stars are set to face Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5, followed by a crucial encounter against Niger in Morocco on September 9, as they aim to secure their place in the 2025 AFCON tournament.
