Hearts of Oak will be compelled to play their home matches at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon following the National Sports Authority’s (NSA) announcement of closure of the Accra Sports Stadium for renovations.
The National Sports Authority (NSA) has temporarily closed the Accra Sports Stadium and Cape Coast Sports Stadium for maintenance. This move is part of efforts to upgrade the facilities to meet international standards.
The decision comes on the heels of a directive issued last week by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which banned the use of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for CAF/FIFA senior international matches due to the poor condition of its pitch. CAF has recommended a full reconstruction of the Baba Yara Stadium playing surface.
In response, the NSA is working on temporary fixes to ensure the venue can still host Ghana’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier against Sudan in October.
Following the Baba Yara pitch concerns, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has instructed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to engage CAF to inspect the Accra Sports Stadium to assess its suitability for hosting the match.
Although the Accra stadium is listed in CAF’s database, it still requires substantial improvements to meet the required standards. As a result, Kotoko will relocate to the University of Ghana Stadiu for more than a month, affecting their scheduled home fixtures.
The Phobians had planned to host Bechem United home games on matchdays 3 of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season but must now shift venues due to the stadium closure.
