Legendary midfielder Mohammed Polo has expressed his belief that Hearts of Oak is suffering from a lack of God’s blessing amid ongoing struggles on the pitch.
The Phobians have faced significant challenges in recent seasons, failing to secure a top-ten finish in the league standings. They ended the previous two campaigns in 12th place and concluded the 2023/24 season in 14th position. The current campaign started poorly, with the team suffering two consecutive defeats—first losing to debutant Basake Holy Stars and then falling 2-0 to Heart of Lions.
However, the Phobians managed to turn their fortunes around with a 2-0 victory over Bechem United at the University of Ghana Stadium, thanks to goals from Ransford Mensah and Hamza Issah.
In an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM, Polo, who dedicated 21 years to the club, lamented the ill treatment of club legends, asserting that such neglect has contributed to the team’s poor performance.
“Poor treatment of players affecting Hearts of Oak. I have been denied several opportunities by the club and I think bad treatment of players has contributed to their recent struggles. Honestly, they lack God’s blessings,” he stated.
Polo urged the club to value its legends, recommending that they incorporate them into the day-to-day operations of the team, similar to practices at top European clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Barcelona.
“Asante Kotoko are better off in giving their legends opportunities. In Europe, clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea and others always include their legends and it is hard time they learn from them” he added.
Looking ahead, Hearts of Oak will face Nations FC in Kumasi during matchday 4 of the Ghana Premier League this Sunday.
