Asante Kotoko’s difficult season took a turn for the worse on Sunday when they suffered their third consecutive defeat, losing 1-0 to Bechem United at Nana Gyeabour Park.
The defeat extends Kotoko’s poor run of form, which started with losses to Legon Cities and Heart of Lions, and has now seen them drop to sixth place in the standings, being overtaken by rivals Hearts of Oak.Bechem United scored the only goal of the match through a spectacular strike from Kofi Tompuo.
Tompuo received a pass and unleashed a powerful long-range shot that beat Kotoko goalkeeper Mohamed Camara in the 27th minute.Despite having more attempts at goal (nine to Bechem’s seven), Kotoko struggled to convert their chances.
Bechem, who had slightly more possession with 51% compared to Kotoko’s 49%, defended well and frustrated Kotoko’s attacks. Despite their efforts, Kotoko failed to produce a single shot on target to trouble Bechem’s defense, highlighting their struggles in front of goal.
The result could put Kotoko coach Prosper Ogum under more pressure, especially after he mentioned player fatigue as a contributing factor to the team’s poor performances. With a crucial local derby against Nations FC coming up, Ogum’s position could be at risk if Kotoko’s form does not improve.
Bechem United, now in ninth place, will aim to build on this victory as they prepare to face Berekum Chelsea in their next match. Meanwhile, Kotoko will need to turn things around quickly to salvage their season.
