The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director, Henry Asante-Twum, has revealed that Otto Addo’s future as head coach of the Black Stars is under intense scrutiny, with some Executive Council members questioning his suitability for the role.
This follows Ghana’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in over 20 years, a historic disappointment for the nation.Speaking to Joy FM, Asante-Twum disclosed that the nearly five-hour meeting between Addo and the Executive Council on November 20, 2024, revealed a divide among members regarding the coach’s future.
During the meeting, Addo presented a detailed report addressing the team’s underwhelming performance in the AFCON qualifiers.
“There were members who argued that they do not believe he [Otto Addo] is the right man to take the team to the next level, including the World Cup qualifiers and future tournaments, despite his long-term contract,” Asante-Twum said.
He added that another faction of the council felt that with the right support, including a revamped management team and backroom staff, Addo could still succeed.
However, skepticism remained. “If you play six matches and are unable to win a single one, then what is the point? We have to move on without him,” one faction reportedly argued.
Ghana finished bottom of Group F in the AFCON qualifiers, collecting just three points from six matches, marking an unprecedented low for the national team.
Addo’s continued role now hinges on further consultations and decisions by the GFA and its stakeholders.
