Former Black Galaxies captain Gladson Awako has warned that defeating Nigeria in the CHAN qualifiers for a second consecutive time will be no easy task.
Ghana previously triumphed over their West African rivals in the 2022 playoffs, a campaign in which Awako played a pivotal role. The home-based national team is set to host Nigeria on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium for the first leg of the playoffs.
Speaking to Asempa FM, Awako emphasized the challenge ahead:
“They won’t have it easy this time because the last time, we managed to eliminate them from this same tournament, and as always, it’s Ghana versus Nigeria,” he said.
“These Nigerians often feel superior, whether it’s because of their height or where they come from, but in the end, we always manage to surprise them. I believe this group of players can do the same by staying humble and listening to their coaching staff.”
The first leg of the Ghana-Nigeria CHAN playoff will take place this Sunday in Accra, with the return fixture scheduled for the following week in Nigeria.
The aggregate winner will secure a spot in the 2024 CHAN tournament, to be hosted in East Africa.
