Dr. Randy Abbey, an Executive Committee Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), is reportedly the frontrunner to be appointed Minister for Youth and Sports under the incoming administration of President-Elect John Dramani Mahama, according to close sources.
The experienced football administrator and bankroller of Ghana Premier League side Heart of Lions has been a prominent figure in the development of Ghanaian football. His deep knowledge of sports administration and longstanding contributions to the game make him a strong candidate for the role.
Sources indicate that Dr. Abbey’s close relationship with Ibrahim Mahama, brother of the President-Elect, has also positioned him as a preferred choice for this critical ministerial appointment.
In preparation for this potential new role, Dr. Abbey has announced his resignation as Managing Director of Ignite Media Group, which oversees Metro TV, Original FM, and Original TV. He will also step down as the host of the popular morning show “Good Morning Ghana,” effective December 31, 2024.
Dr. Randy Abbey’s extensive portfolio in sports administration includes his election to the GFA Executive Committee in 2019. He has chaired key committees such as the Referees Appointment Committee, the Black Satellites Management Committee, and the Black Meteors Management Committee.
If confirmed, his appointment as Sports Minister would bring years of expertise and a strategic vision to the ministry, with many stakeholders hopeful for significant strides under his leadership.
