President John Dramani Mahama has announced a significant restructuring of Ghana’s governmental ministries, notably renaming the Ministry of Youth and Sports to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
This change, executed under Section 11(3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C. Law 327), effectively separates the previously combined youth and sports sectors into two distinct entities.
The newly established Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment will now focus exclusively on youth-related initiatives, while the Ministry of Sports and Recreation will oversee the country’s sports sector.
This restructuring reduces the number of ministries from 30 to 23, streamlining governmental operations.
In the coming days, President Mahama is expected to announce appointments for the new ministers, including the Minister for Sports and Recreation.
Former Sports Minister Nii Lantey Vanderpuije is among those widely speculated to assume the role.
