The Bono Regional Police Headquarters has arrested Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the owner and bankroller of Nsoatreman FC, following violent clashes during a Ghana Premier League match.
The incident occurred on Sunday during the Matchday 19 fixture between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko at the Nana Kronmansah Park.
The match turned chaotic as players and officials engaged in physical altercations, leading to the tragic death of an Asante Kotoko fan, Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as “Pooley.”Frimpong was reportedly stabbed to death by unidentified assailants.
Baffour Awuah, a former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations and ex-Member of Parliament for the Sunyani West Constituency, has been arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit murder. He is also accused of inciting fans, which allegedly contributed to the fatal confrontation.
In response to the violence, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended the Nana Kronmansah Park indefinitely.
The GFA has also scheduled an emergency meeting with Premier League clubs, key stakeholders, and supporters’ groups on Thursday and Friday to address the issue.
Additionally, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor has been assigned to lead investigations into the incident as authorities work to bring those responsible to justice.
