Former Black Stars assistant coach George Boateng has criticized the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for failing to properly assess and address the team’s struggles, leading to a further decline in performance since his departure.
Boateng, who was part of Ghana’s technical team during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, believes a lack of continuity and proper evaluation after the team’s disappointing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign has contributed to the Black Stars’ ongoing struggles.
“I am a very strong believer in continuity. I said it straight after the tournament [2023 AFCON] and also in the media that, as disappointing as it is, the federation has to analyze it,” Boateng stated.
He emphasized the need for a thorough assessment of all aspects of the team, from management to the playing squad, to identify and replace underperforming individuals.
“You have to go in-depth to see where the mistakes were in terms of management, players, and staff, and then you replace those who were not competent enough—whether it’s the playing body, a staff member, or the technical team,” he added.
Boateng also questioned whether such a review had taken place, pointing to the Black Stars’ continued struggles since his departure.
“You then rebuild on that, but I am not too sure if that has been done after the Africa Cup of Nations because you can see that after I left, we have now had a bigger slide. At least when I was there, we qualified and were unlucky not to get out of the group stage,” he remarked.
Ghana’s recent performances have left fans frustrated, with many calling for urgent reforms within the GFA to restore the Black Stars’ former glory.
