The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that the government will abolish the controversial 10% withholding tax on betting.
The statement was made during the 2025 budget reading in Parliament on March 11, 2025.
The tax, which was introduced in August 2023, required betting companies to deduct 10% from punters’ winnings, a move that sparked widespread backlash from bettors, gaming operators, and sports enthusiasts.
Many argued that the policy was unfair and discouraged participation in the gaming industry.
Speaking in Parliament, Dr. Ato Forson stated, “We will abolish the 10% withholding tax on betting.”
Although the tax has not been officially removed, the announcement has been met with excitement among sports betting fans, with many welcoming the decision as a relief.
