Ghanaian midfielder Alfred Duncan has shed light on his early retirement from international football, citing a lack of respect and recognition as key reasons behind his decision to step away from the Black Stars.
The Venezia star, who was once a promising member of Ghana’s U-20 World Cup squad, revealed his frustration in an interview with SportyFM, explaining why he opted to focus on his club career rather than continue fighting for a place in the national team.
“With the national team, it’s kind of complicated…because I wasn’t getting the respect I think I deserved,” Duncan stated. “It was best to part ways in order for the younger ones or the ones they think were right for the team to get the chance to play.”
Despite being a consistent performer in club football across Italy’s Serie A, his involvement with the Black Stars remained limited, often being excluded from key tournaments or playing a bit-part role when called up.
Having played for clubs like Inter Milan, Fiorentina, and Sassuolo, Duncan has established himself as a dependable midfielder in European football. However, his international career never truly took off, leading to his decision to retire prematurely from national duty in 2022.
He made his debut in 2012 and subsequently made a total of 10 appearances.
His last game for the national team dates a back to 2017.
