Ghana coach Otto Addo explains why he started local goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare ahead of Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Joseph Wallacot in Ghana’s big win against Chad on Friday’s night.
Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare made a solid impression on his Ghana debut, helping the Black Stars secure a commanding 5-0 victory over Chad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Friday.
Asare, widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in the Ghana Premier League this season, justified his selection with a composed and assured performance.
Although he had little to do for most of the game, the shot-stopper showed confidence whenever called upon, dealing well with Chad’s occasional attacking threats and commanding his area with authority.
His inclusion in the squad was a reward for his outstanding club form, and his impressive display highlighted the increasing trust in locally-based goalkeepers.
With this performance, Asare has staked a strong claim for more opportunities in the Black Stars setup.
“I think he did well in training, we observed all three, we saw a lot of games from all of them.
“It was a close race. They all did well in training, I have to say. But Benjamin did a bit better. That’s why we decided at the end to play.
“For me it’s not about where you play or whatever. It’s surely about performance in your club, but also in our training. We had three trainings and he did very well, that’s why we chose to play him”. Otto Addo told the media after the game.
Ghana will travel to Morocco for Matchday six [6] fixture against Madagascar on Monday.
