No game, no stay: Kotoko SACK defender Kwasi Asante after a frustrating spell

Asante Kotoko have officially terminated the contract of defender Kwasi Asante, just five months after he joined the club during the January 2025 transfer window, according to Kickgh.com.

The 29-year-old left-back failed to make a single appearance for the Porcupine Warriors due to recurring injuries that plagued his time at the club. His contract was mutually terminated after both parties agreed it was in their best interest to part ways, with Kotoko offering the player financial compensation.

Asante was signed to bolster Kotoko’s defense in the second half of the season and came with a solid reputation, having previously featured for Guinean side Hafia FC and Simba SC of Tanzania. His versatility and physicality were seen as key assets for coach Abdul Karim Zito’s side.

However, the defender’s stint in Kumasi never took off. He suffered multiple setbacks shortly after joining and spent the entire period on the sidelines, undergoing treatment and rehabilitation with the club’s medical team but ultimately failing to recover in time to contribute.

A close source to the club revealed that Kotoko and Asante had been in discussions over the past few weeks and reached a mutual understanding to terminate the deal.

With the contract now officially ended, Asante becomes a free agent and is expected to focus on regaining full fitness as he eyes a return to competitive football ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

His departure adds to Kotoko’s ongoing efforts to restructure their squad ahead of next season, as they aim to return to domestic and continental prominence.
