Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has outlined his expectations for the club’s CAF Confederation Cup campaign, insisting that qualifying for the group stage is the minimum standard required.
The veteran coach, who guided Dreams FC to the semi-finals of last season’s competition, says Kotoko must take things step by step but warned that failing to progress past the early rounds would represent failure for the Porcupine Warriors.
“We know we are going to play Kwara United and the bottom line, the target is to qualify to the group stage. That’s all. Before, if we have anything else to talk about, we talk. He told Akoma FM in Kumasi.
This is a gradual process. You can’t just jump from one to three without going to two.So now, the one is Kwara. Let’s finish with Kwara and if we are successful, to which we are all hoping, then we talk about the next stage.
And after the next stage, it means we are going to the group stage. So please, don’t let us go far. Nobody knows what is going to happen tomorrow.”
Despite Kotoko’s official target being the group stage, Zito admitted he has a higher personal ambition, one that mirrors his exploits with Dreams FC.
“Yes, I will be very, very disappointed if we don’t reach the semi-finals. Why not? There are certain situations you can’t blame yourself, you blame nature. But this is my wish”. He said.
Asante Kotoko will host Nigerian side, Kwara United in the upcoming CAF Confederation Cup on 21st September 2025 at Accra Sports Stadium.
