Asante Kotoko Sporting Club overcame Berekum Chelsea 1-0 in the Premier League opener on Saturday thanks to Albert Amoah’s second-half strike to claim their first win of the season at the Golden City Park.
Coach Abdul Karim Zito had warned his supporters they may need patience following the team’s abysmal performance in the GHALCA Top 4, and their hard work paid off to punish a well-organized home defense.
Zito named a strong starting eleven for this crucial encounter with some notable names like Kwame Poku, Emmanuel Antwi, and Samba O’neil.
However, that plan did not come into perfection after Poku’s injury, which forced him to bring in a new signing, Morifin Donzo.
After a labored first-half display with a couple of chances squandered, Berekum Chelsea failed to keep Kotoko’s frontline at bay and conceded an 80th-minute goal from Albert Amoah in their own backyard.
The Porcupine Warriors, who were far from impressive during the preseason, would be happy for earning a huge three points to start the campaign with victory.
Samuel Boadu’s side will be disappointed for starting the campaign empty-handed and will now shift their attention to All Blacks when they make a long trip to Swedru.
Elsewhere, Asante Kotoko will also welcome Nigerian side Kwara United in the CAF Confederation Cup next week at the Accra Sports Stadium.
