Former Black Stars management committee member, Ernest Thompson, has opined that Ghana will fair well against England or Brazil than some of Europe’s top footballing nations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, cautioning that tactical awareness will be key to the team’s success.
Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Thompson expressed concern over potential matchups against European heavyweights.
“I wouldn’t like us to play Spain, Portugal, Belgium, and most probably France,” he said.
“England, I don’t mind. When we meet England, it’s a different ballgame; it’s like a colonial master and his subject who wants to fight. We learned football from them, and I think we can rise up.”
The experienced football administrator also reflected on Ghana’s past performances against South American sides, drawing lessons from the Black Stars’ previous encounters.
“Brazil play just like us, with individual flair and creativity. But we didn’t play the right tactics. We defended too high and left spaces at the back.
Ronaldo saw it and took advantage,” he noted. “It all depends on getting the tactics right.”
Thompson’s remarks come as Ghana prepares for its fifth World Cup appearance, with fans hopeful that the Black Stars can make a deep run in Canada, Mexico, and the United States next year.
