Former Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Philemon McCarthy believes the magnitude of the Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko’s rivalry is enough to inspire players without any extra motivation.
Speaking ahead of the Super Clash on Sunday, November 9, 2025, McCarthy explained that the atmosphere and stakes surrounding the fixture naturally push players to deliver their best.
“Players don’t need motivation for Kotoko vs Hearts games. The players are always motivated,” McCarthy told ghanasportspage.com
“They know regular matches attract just over 5,000 fans, but this match — there will be full capacity.”
He emphasized that the players understand the weight of the occasion and the consequences of underperforming.
“They don’t really need motivation. They know what is at stake and know if they flop it will affect their careers.”
McCarthy also analyzed both teams’ current strengths heading into the clash, pointing out that Hearts of Oak’s Black Stars goalkeeper gives them a major boost, while Kotoko’s recent participation in African competition, despite their elimination, could serve as extra motivation.
“Hearts of Oak has the Black Stars goalie in post which is also a plus for them. Kotoko also played in Africa — although they were eliminated, it will fuel them,” he noted.
Both sides unbeaten and confidence high as the Super Clash promises to be a thrilling encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium.
