Former Accra Hearts of Oak midfielder Ibrahim Salifu has opened up about his decision to switch nationality and represent Benin at the international level, citing family roots and opportunity as key factors behind the move.
In an interview with ghanasportspage.com , the talented playmaker revealed that his connection to Benin runs deep, explaining that his grandfather originally migrated from Benin to Ghana decades ago.
“I’d say I’m home because I have a Benin ancestry. My grandfather migrated to Ghana in search of greener pastures. And that’s how come I was born in Ghana. It means I have two homes, and now I’m in one,” Salifu told Ghanasportspage.com.
The former Ghana Premier League MVP added that the decision was also influenced by Benin’s interest in his services and his desire to make the most of his professional career.
“Benin are the ones who have shown interest. Football is a short career, so I decided it’s the right time to join,” he explained.
Salifu, who became a fan favorite during his spell with Hearts of Oak, has earned his debut call up and is expected to make his debut for Benin in their upcoming friendly against Burkina Faso as they prepare for the 2025 AFCON in December.
His inclusion is seen as part of the Squirrels’ ongoing effort to strengthen their midfield options with experienced and creative players.
The midfielder’s switch marks a new chapter in his career — one that connects both his heritage and ambition to continue playing at the highest level of African football.
