Former Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Philemon McCarthy has urged head coach Didi Dramani to strike a balance between player development and good results if he is to succeed with the Phobians.
Speaking in an interview with ghanasportspage.com about the club’s current direction, McCarthy noted that while Dramani’s long-term vision to build a youthful and dynamic team is admirable, Hearts of Oak fans are known for their impatience when it comes to results.
“Hearts of Oak are always hungry for trophies. They’ve gone four years without winning the league. The fans don’t have patience for development,” McCarthy said.
The former shot-stopper added that for Dramani’s project to gain traction, he must either deliver consistent results or get good results to win the confidence of the supporters.
“If he will succeed, he needs to get good results or make the fans see the vision and the prospect that the future will be better,” he emphasized
He drew parallels to the early challenges faced by the late Sir Cecil Jones Attuquayefio, who also faced criticism during his rebuilding phase before eventually leading the club to continental glory.
“Even Cecil Attuquayefio didn’t have it easy when he was developing his young players who became a winning team,” McCarthy recalled.
“Given the current situation and the path Didi wants to go with developing players, it will be difficult.” he told Sir Martin on ghanasportspage.com.
Hearts of Oak currently find themselves in a transition period under Didi Dramani, who has focused on nurturing young talent while attempting to restore the club to its former dominance in Ghanaian football.
They are 4th on the table after nine games in the league under Didi Dramani, winning four, drawing four and losing one.
