Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has acknowledged the difficulty of Ghana’s group following the draw for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Speaking to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after the draw, Björkegren, who guided the Black Queens to a bronze medal at the previous WAFCON, admitted the challenge ahead for his side.
“It’s going to be a tough group for sure,” the Swedish coach said.
Ghana have been drawn alongside Cameroon, Mali and Cape Verde, with Björkegren singling out Cameroon for special praise after watching the team recently.
“I watched the Cameroon squad the other day, and I was a little bit surprised. I found out she is from Cameroon. I didn’t know, so it’s an amazing squad,” he noted.
The Black Queens coach also highlighted Ghana’s familiarity with Mali, recalling their previous meeting at the Women’s World Cup.
“We played against Mali in the previous Women’s World Cup, so we know that they are a good team,” he added.
Kim Lars led Black Queens to a third place finish at the 2024WAFCON and would look to improve on their record. Ghana have never not won the competition. Their best result is second place, which they have finished three times – 1998, 2002, and 2006.
