The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed unprecedented sanctions on Senegal following incidents that occurred during the AFCON 2025 final, including briefly abandoning the match.
In a statement released by CAF, Senegal were fined a total of $615,000, marking one of the heaviest financial penalties ever handed down in the competition’s history.
The fines were broken down as follows: $300,000 for supporter misconduct, $300,000 for misbehaviour by players and officials, and $15,000 for accumulating five yellow cards during the final.
CAF also handed severe individual punishments, with Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw suspended for five official CAF matches and fined $100,000 for bringing the game into disrepute.
In addition, Senegal players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr have each been suspended for two official CAF matches after being found guilty of unsporting behaviour towards the referee during the final.
The sanctions follow a review of reports from match officials and disciplinary bodies after the high-profile final, which was marred by confrontations and disorder.
Senegal players acting on order from the technical bench led by Thiaw briefly walked off the field after host nation Morocco were handed a late penalty.
Skipper Sadio Mane intervened and recalled the players to continue the match which the proceeded to win 1-0 after extra time following Ibrahim Diaz’s horrendous penalty miss.
CAF reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and protecting match officials, stressing that such behaviour will not be tolerated at its competitions.
