Accra Hearts of Oak produced a hard-fought victory over their noisy rivals Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium to retain the President’s Cup.
The Rainbows earned the much-needed win in the nation’s capital under pressure, having been defeated by Great Olympics and Aduana Stars in the Ghanaian top-flight.
It was hard for both sides to score but the Rainbows put their current happenings aside as Konadu Yiadom scored the game’s only goal in the 57th minute to stop Kotoko from closing the gap on Aduana Stars.
Asante Kotoko nearly equalized in the latter part of the game but they were denied by the crossbar.
Despite the victory, Hearts of Oak are still out of the top four. They sit fifth on the league table with 31 points. Kotoko have dropped from the second place to fourth with same points.
The win was a scrappy, hard-fought three points and marked Hearts of Oak’s eight President’s Cup.
Their deputy coach David Ocloo led the team after Slavko Matic was advised to stay away from the team by the Accra Regional Police Headquarters.
The BetPawa Premier League matchday 20 was also doubled as the President’s Cup to honour the President of the land as part of the Independence Day celebration.
