Slavko Matic became the first foreign coach ever to lift the presidential cup after his Hearts of Oak side beat Asante Kotoko in Sunday’s MD20, which doubled as the Presidential cup.
Asante Kotoko played very well but Hearts of Oak took the lead in 57 minutes with their first shot of the match and held on for a priceless 1-0 win.
It was hard for both sides to score but the Matic side put their current happenings aside as Konadu Yiadom scored the only goal in the 57th minute to stop Porcupines from closing the gap on Aduana Stars.
The Rainbows earned the much-needed win in the nation’s capital under pressure, having been defeated by Great Olympics and Aduana Stars in the Ghanaian top-flight.
Below are Coach Matic’s starting XI against Asante Kotoko:
Hearts of Oak won previously in 2022 under Coach Samuel Boadu and Slavko Matic won it again for the Phobians in 2023.
This was coach Matic’s second major trophy and he has not been on the losing side between Hearts and Kotoko clash.
As well as winning a brand new trophy, Hearts of Oak earned $50K prize money and three points during their MatchDay 20 campaign.
The BetPawa Premier League matchday 20 was also doubled as the President’s Cup to honour the President of the land as part of the Independence Day celebration.
