Communications director of the Ghana Football Association, Henry Asante Twum has explained why Genk winger, Joseph Paintsil is back in Ghana’s set-up after being snubbed for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Paintsil is joined by Anderlecht midfielder Majeed Ashimeru and goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott, who missed the World Cup due to injury ahead of the double header against Angola.
He has been on top form this campaign, scoring 11 goals and providing 12 assists for Genk as a winger in the Belgian Pro League.
His absence from Ghana’s squad for the World Cup dominated headlines but the spokesperson of the FA says he has proven to be part of the team now.
In an explanation to why the in-form winger was invited, Henry Asante Twum said: “There is a particular reason for every player in the team. Joseph Paintsil is back because he has proven after the World Cup that he is on top form and he’s been knocking on the door,” he told Asempa FM.
Chris Hughton named a 25-man squad on Thursday as Ghana prepares to face Angola.
The squad contains some of the regular faces, including Mohammed Kudus, Thomas Partey and the Ayew brothers, Andre and Jordan.
Ghana will play Angola in a double header this month in search of a ticket to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations slated for Cote D’Ivoire in January next year.
The Black Stars will host Palancras Negras at the Baba Yara Sports stadium on Thursday, March 23 before travelling to Luanda on March 27, 2023 for the reverse fixture.
Ghana are joint top of the Group E table with 4 points from two games following a 3-0 win over Madagascar and a 1-1 draw with Central African Republic in June last year.
