Asante Kotoko suffer setback in BetPawa Premier League title challenge after shocking defeat to Medeama SC

For the first time in the 2022/23 season, Asante Kotoko have lost a BetPawa Premier League match at home. The Porcupine Warriors fell to a 2-0 defeat in an action packed game against Medeama SC.

Burkinabé tactician, Seydou Zerbo returned to the team after his compassionate leave following the death of his ten-year old son.

He led the lads with his assistant coach Orlando Orlando Wellington and made some few changes to his line-up after the 2-1 win over FC Samartex, but his team struggled to click in a low-key first half.

Kotoko’s starting lineup featured the likes of Mohammed Alhassan, Georges Mfegue, Augustine Agyapong and captain, Richard Boadu.

They were buzzing in confidence following their impressive home performance but fell to a Medeama side that came into the game without victory in their last ten away games.

The visitors dominated the opening stages and scored an early opener through Jonathan Sowah’s 15th minute header.

Kotoko upped their performance in the second half in search of an equalizer but failed to utilize their chances.

Mfegue powered a goal bound shot in the 60th minute but Medeama SC goalkeeper, Felix Kyei pulled a wonderful save to deny the Cameroonian.

However, Coach Seydou brought in long-term absentee, Isaac Oppong and Eric Zeze to replace Enock Morrison and Sarfo-Taylor but the nervous Porcupine Warriors struggled to get a foothold with Vincent Atinga’s 77th minute strike sealing Kotoko’s defeat.

The result means the Mauve and Yellow side have now moved into fourth place with 37 points. Kotoko have also dropped to the 7th place with 34 – a point behind their rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak.
