Ghana’s legendary boxer, Azumah Nelson has called on the government to focus on boxing in order to make it attractive again.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Atinka FM, the retired Ghanaian boxer disclosed that lack of investment has made it difficult for the nation to succeed in boxing.
“I believe that if you invest in your child you will be happy in future. We have to get those who will help. The nation must get serious on certain things especially boxing and football.
“Let’s focus on it and we will move forward. It will take money to do it. The boxers will train, eat and do other things. If there is no support they cannot do it. We had the support during our time. We passed through Amateur boxing, fought at African Championship and others. We won African titles, West African titles, Commonwealth titles and Word titles because they took good care of us. The nation should invest in boxing too but not only one game.” Azumah Nelson stated.
The 64-year-old made his name in the 1980s and 1990s, having held the WBC featherweight and super featherweight titles.
Azumah Nelson is widely regarded as one of the best boxers to have ever emerged from Africa, having swept a number of titles during his career.
He fought a total of 47 bouts, winning a staggering 39 times, drawing twice and losing just six.
He has already been inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York.
