Spain and Real Madrid legendary goalkeeper Iker Cassillas has announced his retirement from professional football.
After two decades of illustrous career, Casillas, considered by many as the greatest goalkeeper of all time, has finally hanged his gloves having succeeded with the Spanish national team, Real Madrid and finally with Portuguese giants FC Porto.
The five times IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper has played for FC Porto for the past five seasons after joining them in 2015, and has now called it a day on his enviable career. Casillas won the World Cup with Spain in South Africa in 2010, finishing the tournament as the best goalkeeper when he was crowned with the FIFA Golden Glove Award.
Regarded as the impeccable goalkeeper and one the greatest showstoppers Real Madrid have ever produced, Iker Casillas won 3 Champions Leagues, 2 Super Cups, 1 FIFA Club World Cups, 5 La liga titles, 2 Copa del Rey, as well as 4 Supercopa de Espana titles with the Bernabeau outfit. He also won two European Championship titles (2008,2012) with Spain.
At Porto, Casillas won two league titles, the last which was that of the 2019/2020 season. The King of spectacular saves has however, been out of action for over a year now after suffering a heart attack. After celebrating the 2019/2020 Portuguese league title with his teammates recently, he has taken to social media to announce his retirement from football.
“The important thing is the path you travel and the people who accompany you, not the destination to which it takes you, because that with work and effort, comes alone and I think I can say, without hesitation, that it has been the path and the dream destination”, he wrote on Twitter.
