Former Ghanaian coach Joseph Emmanuel Sarpong insists exclusion of local players from the Black Stars is one of the reasons behind mass exodus in the Ghana Premier League.
The tactician’s statement comes after the announcement of Ghana’s 26-man squad to face Mali and Central African Republic in June’s World Cup qualifiers.
The latest call-up which was announced on Wednesday, May 29, by Black Stars head coach Otto Addo only accommodated on local player Frederick Asare of Asante Kotoko.
He is also one of three goalkeepers called up to the 26-man squad with Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Joseph Wollacott being the other stoppers named.
“Our coaches [both foreign and local coaches] are not bold enough to invite the local players that’s why we have mass exodus in the Ghana Premier League. They all want to travel in a bid to play for the Black Stars one day because they will not get the chance whilst playing in the local league,” J.E Sarpong told Accra-based Mothers 102.7FM
The upcoming qualifiers are pivotal for the Black Stars, beginning with a challenging away match against the Eagles of Mali in Bamako on June 6, 2024, followed by a crucial home game against the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on June 10, 2024.
